Artificial Intelligence & Energy Conversion ? How Does That Fit ?

More than 2.5 billion people are online today. A total of around 50 billion devices are connected to the data network. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers, data centers, IoTs, RFIDs, the cloud and blockchain – they all need enormous amounts of electricity. If the Internet were a country, it would have the sixth largest electricity consumption in the world. Tendency ? Rising.

The use of data is increasing every day. Even today, the power of more than forty large power plants is needed to cover the power consumption of the Internet. In addition, there are the data centers, whose millions of industrial servers ensure data storage and organized availability. They are operated on 110,000 volt lines with their own substations. Kept at operating temperature by cooling with water and heat exchangers.

Data traffic is currently doubling every 18 months or so – despite all the savings and ever more efficient computers, we will need 20% more energy on the Internet alone in 5 years time. Further Hyperscale Data Centers are under construction that can handle the data requirements which autonomous vehicles, for example, will produce in the future. That’s about 25 gigabytes per hour per driving device. 3-D maps, which are needed online in real time, as well as lasers, sensors and radar functions require networked transmission without significant latency – with them the data requirement rises to 250 gigabytes per hour and unit.

While today 350 data centers operated by Google, Facebook and Microsoft obtain a good 50% of their energy requirements from regenerative sources – Apple even 80%, other giants care little about sustainability aspects. For example, Amazon’s worldwide cloud infrastructure is largely fed by dirty coal-fired or nuclear power plants.

Unlike Amazon, other infrastructures ad data centers see themselves as part of the solution and not as part of  the problem. Whole cities like Oslo are working towards the goal of being completely CO2-free by 2040. Waste heat from computers is fed to district heating plants and heats or cools. In the “digital future”, ecological thinking plays an important role – a green Internet is not a utopia but must be tomorrow’s reality.

We as TTIP founders and our investment partners – but also the creators of the projects we support – know this and feel connected to the responsibility for a clean digital technology. In addition to highly interesting commercial aspects, it is obvious that, in addition to artificial intelligence for use in eCommerce, Fin- and MedTec, we also feel committed to the conversion of energy into electricity from natural and renewable resources in connection with simple control. For about five years now, we have been researching, calculating and testing a completely new type of power generation from running water. Because this resource is available in abundance. 24 hours a day, without a break and without being dependent on major fluctuations such as wind or sun. Even the decentralized hardware of the power plant technology is almost 100% recyclable, it does not represent any environmental pollution. He himself considered the basis he had devised to be his “most important invention”, as it is 20 times more efficient than the methods used today.
